uTCGP offers SSCs in each Phase of the curriculum. These provide opportunities for students to study a topic of particular interest in greater depth, acquire or improve skills and develop a more questioning and critical approach to medicine. Current SSC topics offered by uTCGP include Medical Education, International Health, Arts and Health, Perinatal Mental Health, Leadership, Clinical Research Trial Design, Communication Skills, Spiritual Care in Medicine and Prescribing. Traditionally SSCs have provided students with a stand-alone educational experience – focusing on a non core aspect of the curriculum. However, in addition, our SSCs have been used to develop and pilot material for inclusion in core teaching and in future will form part of individual student programmes of non-core studies – complementing the experience provided in student projects and BMScs.
