Biography

I am Professor of Obstetrics, the Undergraduate Teaching Dean and Director of the Medical Education Institute in the School of Medicine at the University of Dundee, and an Honorary Consultant Obstetrician at Ninewells Hospital and Medical School.

I graduated from Dundee with MBChB in 1983 and was awarded my MD in 1994. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I was awarded a personal chair in 2006.

My clinical interest is high risk pregnancy particularly the management of multiple pregnancy and pregnancy complicated by diabetes. My research interests and publications relate to both Obstetrics and Medical Education. The main theme of my Obstetric research is ‘the small baby’ particularly the antecedents and consequences of being small at birth. In respect of Medical Education I have an interest in interprofessional education, assessment and approaches to teaching and learning and have authored an undergraduate text on core clinical cases in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

I am currently Director of E-learning at the RCOG and Editor in Chief of the RCOG on-line distance learning programme StratOG.net. I lead the development of StratOG.net which has now been adopted as the core on-line learning resource for Obstetrics and Gynaecology trainees in the UK and was highly commended at the Association of Learned and Professional SocietyPublishers (ALPSP) awards in 2007.

I continue to play a role in the wider University as a member of Court and Senate.
