Biography

I have been an academic GP since joining a practice in Blantyre, Lanarkshire in 1984.  During my early years in practice I undertook a PhD in Glasgow University and a sabbatical year to work as a GP in the Seychelles.  I left to take up the NHSTayside chair of General Practice and Primary Care in the University of Dundee in 1998.   I was appointed as the Director of the Scottish School of Primary Care in 2007.

My research interests lie mainly in health informatics and community based trials, covering the spectrum from record-linkage of electronic health records to decision support to the evaluation of complex interventions.

I have published widely on a number of different types of primary care research notably in the management of long-term conditions such as diabetes and coronary heart disease in the community. I have published 171 journal articles including the BMA research paper of the year in 2009 for a New England Journal of Medicine Paper on the early management of Bell’s Palsy.    I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. 2011

Research

My research interests lie mainly in health informatics and community based trials, covering the spectrum from record-linkage of electronic health records to decision support to the evaluation of complex interventions.

My PhD in health services research was mainly quantitative though my subsequent work in the evaluation of computers in primary care has allowed me to develop skills in record linkage, observational epidemiology, decision support studies, design and conduct of pragmatic clinical trials, economic analyses and systematic reviews. I have been involved in the establishment and development of the Scottish School of Primary Care (SSPC) which seeks to provide opportunities for all primary care clinicians to engage in research throughout Scotland.

Publications

I have published widely on a number of different types of primary care research notably in the management of long-term conditions such as diabetes and coronary heart disease in the community. I have published 168 journal articles including the BMA research paper of the year in 2009 for a New England Journal of Medicine Paper on the early management of Bell’s Palsy.

Teaching

My teaching interests comprise a range of supportive, design, delivery, assessment and evaluation activities. As head of Division, I support our Director of Undergraduate Studies, Jon Dowell. I represent CHS on a variety of faculty bodies such as the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee..

I deliver clinical teaching in my the Mill Practice Dundee, contribute to the phase 2 teaching in clinical epidemiology and deliver a 4 week Student Selected Component (SSC) on clinical trial design.

I am involved in the undergraduate oral and portfolio examinations. I examine 2-4 higher degrees per annum as an internal or external examiner. I am the external assessor for the membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP).
