Biography

Andrew Morris is the Professor of Medicine and Director of the Medical Research Institute at the University of Dundee.  He leads a research team that uses informatics to study the epidemiological and molecular aetiological basis of diabetes and its complications.  He also has a major interest in the use of informatics to support research quality improvement and inter-disciplinary patient care nationally.  He leads the DARTS research study, has published over 200 original papers and has attracted over £20million in peer reviewed grant funding.

He is the principal investigator on many clinical studies of new therapeutics of diabetes as well as genetics of diabetes, including the Wellcome Trust United Kingdom Case Control Collection for Type 2 Diabetes that has recruited 20,000 individuals and Generation Scotland, a study of the genetic health in 50,000 Scots.  He was awarded the RD Lawrence Award by Diabetes UK in 2003, the Saltire Society Scottish Science Award in 2005 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s national academy of science and letters, and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

He was appointed by the Minister for Health and Community Care to be Lead Clinician for Diabetes in Scotland (2002-2006) and led a national programme of quality improvement in diabetes care.  He is a Governor of the Health Foundation.  Since 2010 he has been Convener of the Scottish Academic Health Science Collaboration.

Research

My translational research programme links the epidemiology, informatics, clinical trials and genetics of diabetes. I am/have been the Principal Investigator (PI) of four Programme Grants: (i)The Wellcome Trust Functional Genomics UK Collection for Type 2 Diabetes (2004) – led by Dundee, with Oxford, Cambridge, Mayo Clinic; (ii) the £7.4M CSO Generation Scotland: Family Health Study (2005), that is recruiting 50,000 family members in Scotland for the genetic study of common diseases; (iii) Dundee PI of the £50M Translational Medicine Research Collaboration, a unique pan-Scotland collaboration between NHS Scotland, Universities Scottish Enterprise and Pfizer; (iv) The £3.6M Wellcome Trust Scottish Health Informatics Programme SHIP.

This ambitious 3-year programme will create a Scotland-wide research platform for the collation, management, dissemination and analysis of Electronic Patient Records (EPRs). The programme brings together the Information Services Division (ISD) of NHS Scotland and an inter-disciplinary group of academics from medical and social science background. (2009-2012). Since 1997 I have supervised seven MD/PhD students, and seven postdoctoral fellows.
