Professor Rami Abboud, Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching and Head of Postgraduate Division, School of Medicine, has been awarded an honorary professorship from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and the Sancheti Institute for Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. This accolade recognises Professor Abboud's longstanding contribution to orthopaedics and acknowledges 14 years of collaboration with staff and students from the Sancheti Institute.
The award was announced at the recent meeting of the Indian Association of Sport Medicine (IASM), to which Professor Abboud had been invited as Chief Faculty. One of the University's MCh (Orth) graduates, and Chairman and Managing Director of the Sancheti Hospital, Dr Parag Sancheti, is President of the IASM, and Professor Abboud and his accompanying team from the TORT Department were delighted to reconnect with a number of our alumni there.
While at the conference, Professor Abboud, Dr Graham Arnold and Mr Sadiq Nasir delivered a workshop on gait analysis - which was attended by almost 100 delegates and extremely well received - and Professor Abboud gave his keynote speech "Biomechanics in sports or vice-versa" and a separate lecture on "Cricket, bowlers and landing: good, bad and ugly" which covered the importance of clinical gait analysis and the ways in which it can help athletes improve their performance while also helping them prevent injury.
Speaking about the conference's success, Professor Abboud said, “It was a great privilege to be invited by the President of IASM for the third year running to attend this prestigious sports conference and for the second year running to be invited as the Chief Faculty. In his second and last year as President of IASM, Dr Parag Sancheti, who is one of our MCh (Orth) graduates from 2003, managed to assemble a distinguished programme of national and international speakers that was commended by the IASM committee, past presidents and the founder to be the best IASM meeting so far."
Dr. Parag Sancheti commented, “I have known Professor Rami Abboud for the last 15 years. He has done exemplary work at the TORT Center and Ninewells Hospital. His perseverance and hard work has taken the Department of Orthopaedics to places. Keeping this in mind, and his contribution towards the TORT Center and Ninewells Hospital, the Sancheti Group of Hospitals and Sancheti Institute of College of Physiotherapy (recognised by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and Medical Council of India) takes great pride in conferring upon him Honorary Professorship.”
Remarking on his honorary professorship, Professor Abboud added, "For once I was left speechless, literally devoid of words, when the announcement was made by Parag, but I am deeply honoured to receive this award, which coincides with the year that we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of our MCh (Orth) course later in 2018. This award nicely compliments the Chancellor’s Award received in 2017 and the Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2012, which were all received towards excellent contribution in teaching and the outstanding advancement of knowledge in Orthopaedics. For someone who is not surgically or medically qualified, I feel privileged to be perceived at this high level by my surgical peers both nationally and internationally."
