What is altered in the brains of people who are dependent on alcohol or drugs of abuse? Is there something that can help us understand why people have addictive personalities and help them to control this behaviour? Here at the University of Dundee, clinical psychiatrists and psychological therapists work alongside researchers under the banner of CARES to study how our bodies and brains become addicted.

Substance abuse and drug dependence are a huge burden to society both socially and financially. Dundee suffers disproportionately from drug-related deaths with more than any other city in Scotland . This means that scientists and clinicians at the Medical Research Institute here are in a prime position to have a huge positive impact on our local society and also disseminate their findings worldwide to understand brain mechanisms underlying addiction and withdrawal.
