SHARE will be marking its 200 000th signatory on the 12th March 2018 and we invite you to join our celebration!

The SHARE register is a unique initiative, created to establish a database of people interested in participating in health research, making it easier for doctors and scientist to carry out ground breaking research. SHARE uses blood left over from routine testing to help improve treatments for diseases such as Cancer, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Asthma.

One of the many successes associated with the SHARE initiative is our £7 million NIHR Global Health Research Scotland/India collaboration, which uses the anonymised data from volunteers, including SHARE registrants, to investigating Global Diabetes Outcomes.

Diabetes has attained epidemic proportions worldwide. The first step to combating any epidemic is to gather all available information about it. However, it became evident to researchers in this field that the data obtained from databases like SHARE could not be directly extrapolated to different ethnic groups, including Indians, as the natural history of diabetes is quite different in these populations.

From its humble beginnings in a small room in 1966, Dr V Mohan’s Madras Diabetes Research Foundation is recognized worldwide as a premier research institute for diabetes and its complications. Dr Mohan will join us on the 12th March to discuss his foundation. Professor Colin Palmer, will follow to explain how big data and precision medicine are being utilised with the aim of improving patient outcome globally.

If you would like to join us for our celebration: Monday 12th March 2018, 12 noon – 1pm, Gannochy Trust Lecture Theatre, Level 7, Ninewells, then please register by contacting Miss Kirsten Cummings by the 25th February. Places are limited. A light lunch will be provided for those who attend the talks.
